HINTS AND TIPS
Scalding Risk from Domestic Hot Water Systems
As a result of the recent news of the fatal incident involving a 10-month old baby in Taunton this Hints and Tips page provides typical warning signs, should your thermostat fail.
The problem occurred when the immersion heater installed in the cylinder continued to heat the water within it.
When water is heated it expands and this expansion of water is vented through a vent pipe over the cold water, main storage tank (CWMST) in the loft.
Hot water then entered the CWMST causing the tank to split resulting in near boiling water to cascade into the bedroom below.
Serious incidents like these are rare however there are a number of warning signs that exist, should thermostats fail and you should remember these signs and if noticed you should contact your Repairs and Maintenance department.
Typical warning signs include: -
-
· Excessively hot water coming out of the hot water taps.
-
· Excessive noise or bubbling from the hot water cylinder.
· Hot water coming out of the cold water taps.
· Hot water coming out of WC cisterns, when flushed.
· Steam / moisture in the roof space. -
SHOULD YOU NOTICE ANY OF THE ABOVE WARNING SIGNS, CONTACT THE PHOENIX REPAIR TEAM ON 08442642844
